PRESNELL/PRESLEY FAMILY

This photo shows an East Tennessee tobacco patch located along the Nolichuckey River Valley in western Washington County, near the Greene County line. This is the area in which Enoch Presnell moved his family to after crossing the mountains from North Carolina. The photo was taken by me in Summer 1997.

This site is dedicated to the PRESNELL/PRESLEY family that originally settled in Wilkes and Burke Counties of North Carolina, then moved to Washington and Greene Counties of Eastern Tennessee. Some descendants of this family moved to Indiana and Kentucky during the Civil War.

GREETINGS! My name is Glenda Bastin, and I have been researching the Presnell/Presley family for several years now. The data herein contained represents a glimpse of what is currently known about the ancestors and descendants of ENOCH PRESNELL and his wife SARAH ELIZABETH SALTS.

ENOCH PRESNELL was one of the early pioneers who crossed the Appalachian Mountains in search of fertile land. As his family moved inland across the mountains, the spelling of their surname was changed. In Greene County, Tennessee the family that had been known as Presnell were now sometimes referred to as Presley. The reason for the change in spelling is not known. Perhaps census takers made up for minimal literacy skills with a flair for creative spelling. Or, maybe the musical, but nasal, mountain dialect led to the name being spelled differently.
