Introduction To the Story
This is a dark,
chilling tale about a young girl named Miyu, upon whom the inherent
duty of Guardian was thrust by the rulers of the Dark. A time came
when the Earth and the Dark were joined by a rift. At that point,
the Shinma, entities of godly and demonic qualities, were returned
to their rightful world. However, some were left behind on the earthly
plane. More still are able to escape by the will of disturbed minds
invoking necronomic powers. Oftimes, these beings prey upon the
humans for their blood, their dreams, their emotions, and their
souls. Miyu's task, therefore, is to send the Shinma back to their
shadowed dwelling. To help her in her quest, Miyu is granted immortality
among other traits, but at a cost. Miyu and her kind are still vulnerable
to the weatherings of time. To sustain her existence, she herself
must feed upon the humans, giving them everlasting life in exchange
for their blood and their souls.
Episode I: Ayakashi No Miyako
Himiko, a spiritualist,
travels to Kyoto, Japan's ancient capital. There she attempts to
exorcise a young girl named Aiko, who is later found to be possessed
by Raen, the Shinma who feeds on people's dreams. Her investigation
leads to a case of serial female murders, wherein the victims' bodies
are completely drained of blood. Though determined to find and eliminate
the cause of the girl's illness, Himiko is unsuccessful in her efforts.
That is, until she meets Miyu and Larva. She also runs into Miyahito,
the boyfriend of the first victim, on whom Miyu happens to be keeping
an eye. Himiko is advised by Miyu to no longer pursue the matter
at hand. This, however, only convinces Himiko of her own suspicions
that Miyu is behind the vampiric attacks.
Episode II: Ayatsuri No Utage
Spiritualist
Himiko is hired by a man to investigate his daughter's strange disappearance
at school. A student hands Himiko a sketch of an intriguing manequin-like
doll found where she last saw the girl. Once again, Himiko encounters
Miyu, who now apparently goes to that same school. Himiko's suspicions
are reinforced when Miyu sets her sights on a popular boy named
Kei. Yet Miyu is not alone in her hunt, for another unearthly being
has an interest in the boy's soul. Miyu later attempts to banish
Ranka, a formidable Shinma, as they battle over Kei's body and spirit.
However, Miyu is too late to keep Kei away from Ranka's intentions.
Himiko then discovers a different side to Miyu, one apart from the
being whose relentless thirst for blood haunts Japan.
Episode III: Moroki Yoroi
Himiko is fully
determined to hunt down the Vampire Princess. Her pursuit is fuelled
not only by the search for justice and peace, but also by the need
to satisfy her own longing for the truth. Himiko's endeavors are
rewarded when Miyu comes to her and asks for her help. A man's soul
has possessed an ancient suit of samurai armor. The entity has been
charmed by the magic of Lemures, a Shinma who gains the power to
reincarnate and manipulate souls if offered a sacrifice. The dead
man's spirit now believes itself to be a true Shinma, and it plunders
the local townsarea under the orders of Lemures. Miyu needs Himiko
to exorcise the armor and release the troubled soul. In return for
her aid in battle, Miyu tells Himiko about herself and how she met
Larva.
Episode IV: Kogoeru Toki
Himiko's travels
lead to the town of Kamakura, the capital of the Kanto area, where
she spent most of her childhood. In reminiscing her past, Himiko
dreams of herself as a little girl. She is haunted by vague memories
of wandering off to, then running in terror from a mysterious mansion.
On a whim, Himiko decides to revisit the great old house, where
she meets its new occupant, Miyu. Therein, Miyu at last tells the
story of how she discovered her true nature after her initial encounter
with Larva. Miyu also reveals the secrets of her family's heritage,
and relays the events that occurred the night the Shinma gathered
together in the Dark. Himiko then finally realizes that her destiny
is forever bound with Miyu's by the secret of their blood.
