DYNAMIC-SCIENTIFIC PHILOSOPHY

NOW

Real Time?

In 1998 it was discovered that an enzyme required to synthethize the retinal proteins sensitive to light acts within trillionths of a second. It should be clear that sight is a series of "frames" made by such sensitive proteins as they are created and destroyed in a sequence of many billions per second.
Thus, sight is discontinuous, made of so many frames per unit of time as to appear to be continuous and instantaneous. It should be the same with the other senses, since only by erasing a 'now' perception it is possible to perceive the following 'now' one.

I postulate that all senses are constructed in a 'cinematic principle.' In other words, perceptions can exist only as discontinuous (framelike). In movies, 16 frames p/s are the minimum required for the illusion of 'continuity.'
In organisms, real-time, which is the best approximation to NOW, must reach billions of 'frames' p/s. This is true for all senses, surely: a 'clean slate' is 'written upon' and must be erased 'immediately' if the digital-like percept is to be sensed as 'continuous.'

A short time ago, I read in Science that the 'problem' of 'immediate' action by the enzyme acetyl-cholinesterase at neuron synapses had been 'solved': it acts in several trillionths of a second, i.e., it acts 'almost' instantaneously. Therefore, 'Now' cannot be shorter than several trillionths of a second after the action acting on our senses became a pre-percept. It will take some other similar time to become a percept, at the cerebral cortex, and some more to become conscious, after being 'analized' in the context of related memories.
Extrapolating from these recent discoveries, and also from the well known impressive calculating speed of super-computers, I should add:

DYNAMIC-SCIENTIFIC PHILOSOPHY (D-SP) has postulated that in the realm of COMPLEXITY, 'Super-proteins' --which have been previously postulated as being the repository of memories, cognitive and affective-- are EMERGENTS, created by an interaction of lower-level units. Because of their highly electromagnetic and flexible structure, they are very reactive, being able to act in trillionths of second. One should be able to understand that electromagnetic energy is at the core of ALL activity in living organisms. What we see, hear, feel, is the final result of billions of electrical phenomena per second, which for us are translated into every manifestation of what we call 'consciousness.'

It is the difficulty of understanding these very COMPLEX facts what creates the unavoidable illusion of presumed supernatural entities.
