Giant Schnauzers

We believe that making sure the potential owner is well-informed pros and cons on the breed is very important to the health of the breed and is vital to keeping them out of rescue and other dangerous situations.

I hope this is not the first time you have heard this but...

We love this breed but truly realize Giants are not for everyone. They are athletic dogs full of energy. Their favorite thing is to be right where you are. Ours love human contact. They are very dominant dogs and need dominant figure to be in charge. With early socialization & training this will make for a loving protective pet. They have a great attitude. We strongly believe that it is Vitally important to keep and maintain a good working relationship between breeder and dog owner for the life of the dog. There are a things you will need to know when raising a giant so breeder support is of utmost importance. It is a big commitment. Owning a giant is a great responsibility and breeding one is an even greater one. They are not commodities. Breeders who think so contribute to the problems that crop up as the breed gains popularity.

When inquiring of Giants these are a few things to watch for:

Breeders that don't admit ANYTHING BAD about the breed are usually just trying to sell puppies! A good breeder will tell you the pros & cons on the breed.

Giants should and will give you a warning when a stranger comes to the door. Doing so is part of who they are. It is what they were bred for and what they are still being used for. Once you have been invited in and stay a while the dog should calm down no longer being on point as we say. Aggressive behaviors after you've been in there a while is not part of the standard. Giants are bold and bit cocky! Some can be dog aggressive too. But should always be under control. Temperament can be an inheritable trait. This is important when you have such a large animal and one of the most important things we breed for.

OFA clearances should be available on both parents. This can not be done until they are 2 years of age. There is a problem with hip dysplasia in the breed as in any large breed dog. We personally believe no Giant should be bred without having an OFA clearance!

Breeding Healthy Strong Sound Giants makes for Healthy Strong Sound pups. Breeder should give some health guarantees.

Responsible Breeders require pet, spay and neuter contracts for pet quality dogs. Pet quality means non breeding dogs and will only breed the show quality dogs

Not all champions need to be bred. breeding is for the improvement of the breed.

Breeders should take back dogs they produce and not let them fall into the wrong hands or rescue situations. They get money on the placement of the dog they should take the dog back if the pup owner can not keep it. Breeders must not contribute to rescue problems!
