Gibraltar first issue of postage stamps was on 1 January 1886, although Spanish and Great Britain stamps were used in Gibraltar before that date. In 1856 Spanish stamps was officially authorised followed by Great Britain in 1857.
Spanish stamps in Gibraltar 1856 - 75
Gibraltarians took advantage of the cheap rate of Spanish rate thus saving by acquiring stamps for their letters to Spain. Many letters written in Gibraltar were posted across the border in the near town of San Roque. The use of Spanish stamps continued until 1875, when all accepted the recommendation of the International Postal Conference to prepay letters with stamps of the country of origin.
Great Britain stamps in Gibraltar 1857 - 85
The use of Great Britain stamps for the prepayment of mail from Gibraltar was officially authorised from 3 September 1857 until 31 December 1885.
The Victorian Era
On 12 January 1884, negotiations for the transfer of the Gibraltar Post Office from the Treasury to the Colonial Government of Gibraltar, it was not until 10 December 1885 that the Governor of Gibraltar, Sir John Adye, sent a telegram to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, asking for an issue of stamps `like those used in Antigua, but with the word `Gibraltar` in the designs` to be prepaid for issue on 1 January 1886. Time did not allow for plates to be prepared with `Gibraltar` in the designs and De La Rue suggested that a special printing of the contemporary `Bermuda` types be made. This was accepted and the stamps were printed and sent out to Gibraltar on the mail steamer `PESHAWAR` they arrived in Gibraltar on 30 December 1885.

On 1 January 1886 the first definitive issue was placed on sale at the Gibraltar Post Office
The first sterling set
The first definitive issue with `Gibraltar` incorporated in the design was issued in December 1886 and 1887.
Spanish Currency Overprinted
The third definitive issue was on August 1889 although sterling was the official currency in Gibraltar; the local merchants and the Post Office used Spanish currency.
Spanish Currency Issue
The fourth definitive issue with the Spanish currency was released from 8 October 1889-96.
The 1898 Sterling Currency Issue
The fifth definitive issue was made on 1 October 1898. This was necessary because of the depreciation of the Peseta due to the Spanish - American War.
