Kindergarten CURRICULUM

            LANGUAGE ARTS

There is an emphasis on language arts in our Kindergarten program. We work on letter recognition, phonemic awareness, vowel sounds, sight word recognition, comprehension, and pure enjoyment of literature. We read thematic and seasonal poems which we collect in our Poetry Binder. Our independent reading and writing activities are done through Literacy Centers or "Reading Workjobs". We write in Journals, writing centers, class books and other areas daily.

MATH

Our math program is a hands-on approach. We introduce concepts through whole group activities and games. Children work on individual skills during "Math Tub Time", which are centers that use manipulatives and games to reinforce abstract ideas. Math concepts include counting, patterns, sorting/classifying, graphs, time, money, measurement, addition and subtraction.

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES

Science and Social Studies are covered in our weekly themes. Topics include Oceanography, Barnyard Buddies, Butterflies, Apples, Pilgrims, Map Skills, Germs, Bones, Ancient Egypt and Plant Life.

COMPUTER

The children go to computer lab one day a week. Use of classroom computers is limited, however we do use them for research and class books/projects.

GYM

Generally, we go to the Gym 3-4 days a week. Emphasis is on gross motor skills, strength, coordination, teamwork, taking turns and good sportsmanship.

MUSIC

In Music we focus on rhythm, patterns, learning songs and pure enjoyment.

ART

There are many opportunities for artistic expression. Art projects may be open ended or related to our weekly theme.
