Do it! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

When you feel like you're working as quickly as you can and still getting nowhere... when looking at your due list is enough to make you start sweating... when you find yourself rehearsing what you have due whenever your mind is free -- like, "Okay, remember that report due Thursday"... when no matter what you accomplish, you never feel you can stop... do the following:

Make a special calendar.
Buy, or make, a calendar (I'm cheap. I just take a sheet of notebook paper and start drawing squares and labeling days and dates.) Write down all of your activites and due dates. For example, on February 11, you might write, "Math Test." On the 24th, you might put "Report due." For the 27th, you may have to log "Speech." Step back. Sigh. Calm yourself -- it's okay; you will be able to do it all. Click here for an illustration of a "Due" calendar. For each entry that requires preparation, like that report, or a test, log WHEN you plan to do the preparation. For example, if you decide it will take three days to study for your test, write "study science" on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. |

Great calendar tips. . .
Break assignments into doable tasks. Instead of putting six days of "work on report" on your calendar, create these activities, one per day: go to library, go to library, finish note taking, write first draft, revise, type final draft. Click here for an illustration of a "Do" calendar. Allot more time than you think you will need. If you think the paper will take four days to research, three days to write, and one day to type, schedule ten days for the project instead of the eight you expect. The unexpected happens: Grandma visits from Tallahassee, the dog eats your paper, the computer crashes. If you plan extra days, you won't care. |

More great calendar tips. . .
Follow your calendar strictly! The trick, believe it or not, is to NEVER WORK AHEAD. Why not? Working ahead will make you feel stressed. You will always feel as if there is more to do. By sticking to your calendar, you will have times when you are done for the day! Then you can kick back with a book, or the tube, or some pals and think: "Hey man, I'm right on schedule."
