Have you been labeled disabled? |
A very smart lady I know named Sarah Adams, author of "As Ye Sow," claims everyone is disabled. That's right, every one of us. |

"I'm creatively disabled," she says of herself. |

Some can't cook at all. (I'm afraid I fall into this category, too. Everyone stays way clear of my goopy pancakes!). |

I suppose I would have to be temper disabled (as I have to work very hard not to fly off the handle). Some people have trouble taking tests. Some falter in reading. Some have difficulty remembering faces (like me). |

The thing is, some disabilities show up in school more than others. Obviously, none of my middle school teachers knew my pancakes could send people to the hospital. But they sure knew the kid next to me couldn't read very well. |

If you have a disability that someone has taken the trouble to label for you (Gosh, wasn't that nice of him!), remember what Mrs. Adams says. We all have disabilities. And we all do what we can to overcome them. I, for example, buy frozen waffles. . . |
The good news about labeling is that it MAY lead to getting into a class situation where you get more attention. |
Don't despair if you don't like the label. It's no more "YOU" than "bad cook" is me. Hardly anyone would identify me as that. You see, people tend to look at the whole picture. I'm a good writer, a funny person, a talented teacher, cough, cough, well, you get the idea. |
What are YOU beyond that one label that points out one of your disabilities? Pin some of your own labels on yourself. "I'm nice. I'm fast. I'm friendly. I am fun. I'm a great reader. I'm good with numbers. I memorize well. I can work great with my hands. . ." You must have a dozen Abilities! Sure, work to improve your weaknesses, but always keep your eyes on your strengths. |
