Here's what happened...
I climbed up the pole without a problem, but when I walked out along the narrow plank, my heart started pounding.  I could hear it in my ears.   People down below were shouting at me.  "You can do it!   Jump!"   I felt weak all over.
Suddenly, I remembered my relaxation exercise, and I took a deep breath.  I remembered what it felt like to play piano in my imagination.  My heart stopped pounding; I felt completely relaxed.   I walked to the end of the plank and, without any hesitation, I
jumped!
I've got to tell you, I was pretty darn proud of myself.  And frankly, quite amazed.   It really worked!  Try it.  What have you got to lose?
If you have a real "nerve" response, don't expect your results too quickly.   Don't give up without a real long honest effort.   Good luck.  And hey, RELAX, wouldya?
