Sir

The bunch of new players in our cricket team bring to light a special nature of Indian people in general (Small Town, Big strides, May 28). Players like Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag have grown up playing in remote villages, with no facilities at all, using wooden planks as bats, lanes as pitches and whatever they could find, tall and broad enough to serve the purpose, as wickets. Whereas Australian and South African players have been bred in posh sports complexes, having features like artificial pitches, ultra-modern exercise machines, electronic gadgets and performance monitoring software. Still when the two come face to face there is always stiff competition. Without having any resources and facilities at all, we excel among those who have them in abundance. This notion can be extended to others as well- students, scientists and artists in various fields to name a few. So, if we do something to provide proper infrastructure to nourish the talent we have, then just imagine how far we can go.
