Former gymnast Corina Ungureanu was invited by the Democratic Party from Romania to attend a charity event at the Parliament building, where she handed out toys, candy and clothes to a three-year old girl who’s been diagnosed with eye cancer. Viviana Georgescu’s story had been covered extensively in the press and caught the attention of DP members, who thought about inviting former gymnasts Corina Ungureanu, Lavinia Milosovici and Claudia Presecan to the event. The latter two were unable to attend because they were in Timisoara. Corina Ungureanu reminded everyone that she represents her teammates, too. The Romanian Gymnastics Federation suspended the former gymnasts for 5 years from any official activity related to the organization, after they posed nude in Japanese magazine. Corina Ungureanu was asked to talk about the RGF’s decision and described it as “fair”. “It’s a fair decision, and one that I was expecting. It’s justifiable and we admit we were wrong to use the symbols of the federation. It was our mistake and we assume responsibility for it. I do think this has been blown out of proportion, though,” she said in a statement, adding that she also speaks for Lavinia Milosovici and Claudia Presecan. Ungureanu also said that she plans to keep coaching from now on “even for free”, because she enjoys doing it.
