Men’s Team Hits the Beach

After a busy spring season, Dan Grecu’s gymnasts decided to spend this week at the beach. Staying at the Sport Hotel in Constanta, the guys confessed in one big chorus that the main goal for their stay is to get some sun and rest. “I hope we brought the sun with us, because we heard it’s been raining lately,” said Marius Urzică. "The guys deserved a holiday at the beach, especially since we have a very busy period ahead of us. We’re leaving for Bucharest on Sunday and we won’t have any time off until the World Championships in October,” explained coach Dan Grecu. Some of the gymnasts brought their family along, others are here on their own, but they all have their own schedule. Everyone is already thinking about the upcoming Individual World Gymnastics Championships set to take place this fall, where they hope to confirm their great results from the European Championships.

Marius Urzică came to Constanta without his wife who is back home taking care of their son, and said he really wants to go fishing. “Maybe I’ll go out at sea to catch gobies, or just find some pond. I like fishing and I think it’s a perfect way to relax.” He plans to spend a day in Costinesti, where his in-laws have a summer house. “Unfortunately, I could only spend one week with my family, and I also became a godfather during that period. Too little time, especially since I’ll start training again and won’t get a chance to see them too often,” added the world pommel gorse champion.

The next competition for Marius Urzică is scheduled for August, in China. “I had to change my [PH] routine, because the code of points has changed. You have to come up with something new to stay on top. I’ll début my routine at the meet in Asia and, based on those results, I’ll decide whether or not it will stay the same.” A happy Marius added his back doesn’t bother him anymore, especially since it’s been causing him a lot of problems last year.

The European all-around champion Dan Potra went to the beach with his girlfriend, Simina. “We’ve been together for two years and we were looking forward to this vacation because we don’t get a chance to spend too much time together." Dan is still bothered by his right shoulder and has been getting treatment for it while in Constanta. He plans not to think about gymnastics the whole week, focusing instead on spending time at the beach. “I do want to defend my national all-around title and qualify for at least two event finals at Worlds,” said Potra.
