Marius Urzica’s Biggest Fan

The fan club of Marius Urzică has just welcomed a new member -his son Andrei. Born a few weeks after the Sydney Olympics, the toddler is just starting to recognize his father whenever gymnastics is shown on TV. His mother, Geta talked about her son’s new-found passion. “He sits still in front of the television screen. He’ll turn around to face me, saying ‘daddy, daddy’, but beyond that, I can’t take him away from the TV.” The story repeated itself during this year’s European Championships, with one exception. “He was sound asleep the first day of competition. I didn’t want to wake him up just so he can watch TV. But on Sunday he watched his father and he was grinning from ear to ear when I told him his dad won. Andrei will only watch television when Marius is on. Afterwards, he’ll loose interest,” added the boy’s mother.

Marius’ wife and son are currently in Năsăud, with his in-laws. Geta explained that the family always goes there when Marius is away, and she couldn’t be too far from home once construction started on the new house they plan to build in Năsăud. Asked to comment on the European Championships, Geta said she kept her fingers crossed for the entire team, but especially for Marius “but not just because he is my husband, but because I know how much he worked for these medals and how much he wanted to win.” Marius was planning on joining his family for Easter and spending some time with them. "I can’t wait to get there. I’m glad to finally be back home and I can’t wait for all these official appearances and television and radio interviews to be over with, so I can be with my family."
Marius was in constant contact with his family while in Greece, calling his wife before the award ceremony on pommel horse was about to start.
