The last competition before Worlds, a tri-meet in Switzerland, showcased the talent on the men’s team. European, World and Olympic gold medallist on pommel horse, Marius Urzicã, proved he can approach the last major event of the year with a lot of optimism.

GS: Marius, your performances in the Glasgow and Paris GP weren’t among your best. Are you still having problems now that you’re about to leave for Worlds?
MU: I think everything’s going according to plan now. I feel great and I hope I won’t have nay problems at Worlds.
GS: How hard will it in Debrecen?
MU: I’ll have a lot of competition. It’s still a World Championship and the best gymnast in the world will be there. Basically, all that matters to me is doing my routine as well as I can.
GS: You complained of health problems after the Paris GP. How are you feeling now?
MU: I don’t think there are any gymnasts out there who haven’t complained of back pain. I managed to get over these small inconveniences. As far as my health goes, I feel great.

GS: You went up on the [pommel horse] podium with Nelutu Suciu. Can we expect a repeat at Worlds?
MU: Like I said, there is no rivalry between us. I would like to see two Romanian gymnasts on the podium.
GS: Can you make any predictions?
MU: I don’t like to talk about results before I compete in an event. I would prefer to let the results themselves do the talking.
GS: Do you think there the Hungarian public might be somewhat hostile towards the Romanian team? [given Romania and Hungary’s long standing rivalry]
MU: Definitely not. All the delegations were welcomed with open arms at pre-Worlds. The arena where the event will take place has just been built and it’s very modern. I for one felt great down there.
