Error #12

Behavioral error:

Using the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal

When/where:

2/23/02, LWC parking lot

Why this is an error:

I wanted to stop, not accelerate.

Processes:

Memory
My episodic memory, incharge of location information, failed me. I confused the placement fo the brake and the accelerator because I was an inexperienced driver. Because of my lack of experience, the information had not been rehearsed enough to be permanently stored in LTM.

Conditioning
When I first learned to drive, I larned in a minivan with a different setup than the drivers ed cars. Once I became conditioned in one vehicle, learning to drive a very similar car with slight differences was difficult. This is referred to as proactive interference.

Perception
My perceptual set for the car was one that placed the pedals in the incorrect location. Also, my kinesthetic sense failed me and I confused the location of my foot.
