Object Information:
M-42 The Great Nebula it is located in the constellation Orion which gave the name to the nebula. One of the finest sights in the sky, this nebula is easily visible to the naked eye as the "fuzzy" star in the middle of Orion's sword. It appears distinctly nebulous in binoculars or finder scopes, and shows an amazing amount of detail through the telescope. It is fully a degree in extent, with a wealth of fine curling wisps of nebulosity curving out from the brightest region The Orion Nebula is a region of star formation and perhaps the most photographed deep sky object in the heavens, a vast nebula of gas and dust shining by the the high energy radiation of surrounding young stars. In the next several hundred million years young stars will appear from this wealth of cosmic matter. Inside the nebula is the fascinating four-star system known as the Trapezium they are energetic massive stars with surrounding extended emission. They are visible in medium sized telescopes and, with the nebula, form one of the most beautiful binary systems in the heavens. The Trapezium is located in the center of the Orion nebula.
