So hopefully at this point you've read the 'So the story goes' about the Dark Manor, so I dont have to repeat Jen's beautifully written history. So lets jump right in shall we? We went on a hunch, a story that we had caught wind off from a family friend. We didnt think there was much chance that we where actually going to find anything and we were pretty damn suprised when we did. The investigation started with a lovely soggy treck through the reaking marshland of the 'Swamp Woods' which wasn't fun let me tell you. After slipping, sinking and sliding along the path for about twenty minutes (Jen's bellowing laughs following along behind us everytime someone would fall) we decided that tackling the dry parts of the woods probably would have been a better idea. Considering the fact that we were all now covered in burrs and mud and I (Dana) had lost her bloddy shoe in the freaking mud three times. Also the path we had been travelling was seeming to lead us no where. |
So how about a little urban legend to kick off the month of October? Sound good to you? On Monday September 29th 2003 the Girly Ghostbusters ventured into the Swamp Woods in search of 'The Dark Manor." The destination: The rank stinky marshland of Kitchener-Waterloo's Swamp Woods The music: No music, we walked unless you count a little musical montage of Chicago! |
So after making our way back through the mucky bush, we popped out (looking mighty muddy might I add) on the other side of the woods and headed off to the dry section to finally begin our investigation. What we found was actually interesting and really adds to the validity of the story. There is only a small section of dry wood at the swamp woods and it begins on the other side of an old dried up stream. After doing some exploring of the area we found that only one quarter of the entire wood is actually dry soil, the rest is basically just a swamp. After about half an hour of investigating the dry area we began to find some very interesting evidence that would help prove our story. |

A dramatic shot of Jen as we decided which way to head. |
Now I know what you're thinking "Bricks...that's your proof," and I'd say "Screw ya...we found bricks what do you think a house is make out of?" We began to find very old, very moldy bricks all around the dry section. Some of them looked as though they had been moved but the majority of them where still buried in the ground. They seemed to be within an area that could possibly have been the surrounding area of an old farm house. Below I've added some pictures of the bricks that we found. |
We began scouring the area searching for more evidence, amazingly we kept stumbling across many of these old crumbly bricks. After pushing through the undergrowth we realized that infact the bricks were all placed and buried in a large square. Somewhere in the center of the square Dana (That's me) called to the rest of the girls and stood up to reveal she had found a very old, child's shoe. Now I dont know where this shoe came from, it looks very old and is somewhat handstitched. I just found it strange to have found a small childs shoe in the very center of what was begining to look like something of a house foundation. It was just than that Jen called and lifted up a small brick shaped piece of sement. The strange thing about this particular piece of brick was that it had a design on it. It appeared to be a piece of a house siding decoration. What they used when decorating the lower part of old houses. It was too covered in old green moss and made of the same crumbling cement. |

Just some of the many bricks we found at the Swamp Woods, while searching for the 'Dark Manor' |

Finally after searching through most of the dry wood we where suprised to find what looks very much like the crumbling walls of a building this is only one of the many slabs that where acually there. |
We are definitely going back this this location to search for more evidence of the Dark Manor. This I think just goes to show that some of those creepy Urban Legends that you where told as a kid sometimes have the possibility of perhaps coming from a place of truth. |
