Heuga CAN DO 2005

March 9-13, 2005 - an experience that won't soon be forgotten by myself, the twenty-four other participants and their support partners, who attended the Heuga CAN DO Program in Vancouver, BC. When my Neurologist and MS Nurse told me about Jimmie Heuga, his center and his commitment to helping others with Multiple Sclerosis, I was very interested. After reading the information on the Internet, I downloaded an application and applied immediately for the CAN DO Program. To learn there would be one held in Vancouver, BC was an extra bonus. To hear that I was accepted, realizing only twenty-five people could attend, was amazing. Then to be informed the entire program would be 100% sponsored by Biogen was 'Awesome.'

Where do I begin to describe the Heuga CAN DO Program? I've come up with a word which only begins to describe it - 'FANTABULOUS!' Of course I can only speak for myself but I am confident all who attended CAN DO were just as impressed. Upon receiving my travel plans, I also was emailed a picture of the Limo that would be picking us up at the airport. Right then I knew we were in for an experience of a life-time. This told me that The Heuga Center was intent on making us feel important as well as comfortable. Holding the retreat at the Marriott Pinnacle, downtown Vancouver was another clue that we would be well taken care of. We certainly were!

Let me begin by saying, I recommend the Marriott Pinnacle, downtown Vancouver, to anyone and everyone looking for "The Best Hotel." Not only was the hotel beautiful, the staff were out of this world. They attended to our ever want or wish, always wearing a big smile. The rooms were lovely with very comfy beds. The dining was five-star all the way. For the person who likes sweets (that would be me) the desserts were fabulous. While staying at the Marriott, I felt as if I were living in a castle. I felt like royalty!

The Heuga Staff - again I am at a loss for words. Incredible, terrific, wonderful, caring, compassionate, supportive - all words to describe the individuals who spent those five days educating and encouraging us. From day one I was very impressed as I realized how miraculously we all fit together - the participants, support partners, Heuga staff - so many people from different backgrounds, life-styles, not to mention from different parts of Canada and the United States. So many personalities but yet all on common ground. I felt we were all as one. We were able to sit and chat with the staff as if we'd known them forever. Through the heartfelt talks and many laughs, I feel lasting friendships were made. I am certain that we have formed a fantastic network of support.

The Program was so intelligently organized. It was very apparent how educated the Heuga staff are regarding Multiple Sclerosis. Keeping in mind the limitations of an individual with MS, the schedule was perfect, with physical activities early in the day and lectures slated at times when our energy level was at a low. Every aspect of the program was logically prepared. The lectures were very informative as well as interesting. We learned about stress management, nutrition, the importance of exercise and so much more. We learned how to live well with MS. For me it was a time to refresh my knowledge of MS as well as add to it. The workshops were interesting as well. We had so much fun learning new techniques, especially with the Swiss ball. I believe we each were able to bring home with us some type of exercise that will fit perfectly into our lifestyles. The program was based on goal setting. I am positive that each one of us were able to set goals, which will be beneficial as we strive to enhance our quality of life with Multiple Sclerosis.

I am so glad I was picked for the CAN DO Program. I feel privileged to have been part of such an unbelievable program. I feel it is something that every single person with MS should experience. The entire program was highly motivational. I came home a new person - on a 'Heuga High'. I just wish it were something I could attend every other week.  As it is, I am looking forward to attending the follow-up CAN DO 2 Program in the future. I loved it so much I told one of the staff I wish I could join the Heuga team. CAN DO was a real treat and a life-changing experience. It was "FANTABULOUS!" Thanks so much Jimmie Heuga!
