WRITING A QUERY TO THIS PAGE
You need to write your QUERY with the aim of ringing a bell in the mind of a reader(s). This requires putting some meat on the bare bones of a Query. Thus the writer should in writing a query be generouss with his/her knowledge, allowing the following; Use full dates, circa 1840 is fine if that is all you have to use, but 1844-1899 is better. Include full names of spouse, maiden name of wife, date of a marriage, death, birth, Full name of Location/residence of the people in the Query. It is much better to say something along the following line for a location --- like lot 20 5th concession of Lochiel township, Glengarry County -- than say Glengarry County or Lochiel township.
Also beware that the name you are looking for is by no means unique. That common names like John, Mary, Alex, exist by the dozen for almost any surname to be found in these 5 counties, Scotch or French alike. Therefore the better you work to identify the person you are looking for with your specific outline, the better your chance is of having a bell ring in the mind of a reader. To often we have been asked a simple query only to be left lost by lack of information from the writer and we end up with 2 to 5or more possibilities to match that same vague Query. Dead end.
If you know that a couple had children include that information as well, likewise add their dates, thus helping the reader to better define the possibilities in a reply.
Do not expect readers to be mind readers when reading your Query, or in deciphering the information you are actually after or as a result of a vague short Query that was written.
