On the 11th September 2001 a most heinous crime was committed against Humanity in New York, Pittsburgh and at the Pentagon. Many thousands of lives were lost, families were deprived of the futures they envisaged and adults and children are left psychologically and physically scarred for the rest of their lives. As I watched the events unfold live on TV here in the UK, I was left stunned, shocked and bewildered. Later, I understood why War Vets shunned tales of their exploits and warned that War should not be allowed to happen again. I understood why the Elderly Residents in my care at work did not relish reminiscing about the War years and why they didn't want to watch Memorial Services. It brings back too many painful memories. I understood what one gent, years ago meant when he said "the Good Old Days don't exist son, they were Bad, we just try to only remember the few good times we had". As recently as 40 years ago, Nations were just that, countries with 95% single Nationality that went to War with each other. This time around, nations consist of countries with a vast mix of Cultures. This time, we have a chance to truly stand together, united against this new terror. As I watched events on TV, I saw a Nation join together as One, in the UK we drew together as One, no longer was black, white, whatever, pitted against each other. Petty differences like skin colour and religion went out the window, we are human beings with a common sorrow and a common purpose. It is this common purpose that we must build upon, Right Now, we must seize the moment, embrace the chance we are being given to Unite as Citizens of the Earth. In WW1 and WW2, Korea and Vietnam, and countless other wars, millions of lives were lost. Not entirely needlessly, as we did learn from them, but, in this instance, we do have a chance to really make progress, to take a Quantum Leap in the Unity of Humankind. An opportunity to work and live together as One and give the lives that were so suddenly taken, a purpose and not to have been taken in vain. The World as a whole, with the exception of course, of the perpretators and their supporters, is United against the threat of Global Terrorism. We must ensure that it is Unity that drives us forward and not Vengeance or Revenge. Hatred never overcame Hatred, only Love can overcome Hatred. A Love for each other, our fellow Humans and a Love for the Planet upon which we depend for our very existence.
