Monks are everywhere. Most men become a monk at some time in their lives especially during the rainy season. The souls of people leaving this world are guided to the next by holding on to a monks robes. Therefore many men will become a monk for a short time after a loved one dies. Monks robes consist of three difficult to wear pieces of fabric. It takes them a while to get the hang of it. They survive on the charity of the people who daily "make merit" by donating food, toiletries and money. Monks are seen in the morning collecting these items in their special bowls. They then return to the monestary and eat before mid-day. No food is consumed after this time. The rest of the time is spent in prayer, studying or visiting people. |
