Note the white line painted on this tree. This line marks the peak of the
1997-98 wet season. That was one of the wettest season on record, with extensive flooding.
Residents in some areas had to be evacuated by helicopter and a large section of the
sealed road from Darwin to Katherine was washed away.
Yellow Waters mangrove
swamp area reminded me of Louisania's bayou country.
According to the guide, these are lotus flower water lilies and
many patches were destroyed by
cyclones during the last wet season.
