The Story of the Crawl:

The Gloucester Crawl occurs up to twice a year and consists of members visiting upwards of fifteen taverns on a given Saturday, located in Gloucester City New Jersey. In its prime, Gloucester City was home to fifty-seven pubs, all within two and a half square miles. The urban legend tells us that Gloucester City was once in the Guinness Book of World Records for being home to the most pubs per capita and most pubs pre square mile in all of the United States.

In planning our first crawl in March of 2000, we were looking at twenty-one taverns. At the finish, we were sad to see that only seventeen were still open. By the third Crawl in November of 2001, fourteen were left. These pubs are historical and must be kept open at all costs. The Crawl wholly supports each and every tavern in the City of Gloucester.

The Crawl has been done by many before us, but never with such detailed planning. We take pride in wearing our Crawl T-Shirts, which are made specially for each crawl. We meet at a committee member's house the afternoon of the crawl, and happily surprise each tavern with our (*cough*) overwhelming presence. We've been complimented by tavern owners on our spirit of comrodery and enthusiasm, and have never had any complaints. All 21+ year old members register at the pre-Crawl meeting with identification, to ensure age verification. The entry fee varies each crawl, but members recieve a Crawl t-shirt and a certificate of participation.

The Crawl route is pre-planned, starting at the two taverns on the outskirts of the City, while drivers remain safe to drive. After this, the real Crawl begins. The remaining taverns are within walking distance of eachother and members are often found only having the ability to "crawl" towards the finish. The reccomendation is that a member have one drink at every bar... but this is by no means a rule... just ask Jerry Collins.

Membership is open to all. We've been known to recruit members along the way, and also pick up stragglers. The rules are simple and obvious. Keep the spirit of the crawl! We do not drive after drinking. We do nothing illegal or unethical. (Morality is questionable what, with our favorite go-go "Billy's Place" along the route.) We remain friendly with the local cliental. We're the guests and we have a reputation to uphold. But the most important rule is... HAVE FUN!
