Max's Seafood Cafe

Established in 1912 as a Saloon, Max's has a long Gloucester City history. The corner building was originally a shoe store until the owner brought back a hand crafted oak and mahogany bar-piece from Germany to convert his store to a saloon called Leisinger's. This beautiful bar is the original piece that remains in Max's to this day. Leisinger's, like several other Gloucester City pubs, operated through prohibition, creatively calling the corner shop a "soft drink establishment." Max's did not become popular as a seafood cafe until 1977, when fresh fish was introduced to the menu. Patrons waited in long lines, often stretching around the corner to be seated at Max's until it was closed in July of 1998. In June of 2001, Max's was completely restored to its original decor and reopened by present owners, John Kunkel and Thomas Monohan.

Some specials offered at Max's include dungenous crab on Tuesday and Wednesday, late night snacks in the bar from 10pm to 12am from Thursday through Saturday, and a free mussell apetizer with every dinner entree on Sunday. (Max's is closed Mondays.) In reference to specials, call ahead at 456-9774. www.maxsseafoodcafe.com
