Secret River, Secret Heron
(inscribed in volume of Yeats, for Camille)

Along the river
that brought you
to me the heron
glides.  When he lands
he stands rooted
in the stream,
poised, still, touched
by twilight.  He will
beak the water's flow
and fetch out for you
perfect silver fish.

Pivot

cool gray morning
                              air still
leaves' green dulled
                              against the sky
promise of sun
                              later
swifts wheel just overhead
                               pivoting a brief
equilibrium

Happy Hour

I like the smoke
and dimness,
the way light glints
and glistens on the bottles,
the smell
of cigarettes and sweat
and perfume,
the feel of pitted
wood under my fingers,
the tinkle of ice
and idle talk.
I can look
into the mirror
behind the bar
and not see
my eyes.
I am alone
on my small high
island.
One more bourbon
and perhaps
I can cut the last
strings and soar up
to where I can look down
on the bar
and the glasses
and the hands
holding drinks
and the bright tips
of cigarettes
and my own sole
figure in
a gathering
pool of
shadow.
