Glynn Lockwood Remembered

Glynn was ready to begin recording "Joanna" and do some overdubs on the released version of "Leave It The Way It Was." He was here at my studio on Friday 3/16 for a two-hour planning session, so we could decide how to go about the production process.

He left last Friday with a couple of quick cassette demos of "Joanna" to bring to Darrell Voss and Don Streeter (drums and guitar) for them to work with. Don most likely saw Glynn over the weekend. (The songs came from a 1999 practice session. His last fully-produced recording is "Leave It" which was recorded here in summer 2000.)

I spoke with him on Saturday, 3/17, by phone. He was firming up plans for a children's choir to overdub on "Leave It."

Glynn was upbeat, looking ahead, and ready to work on the songs.

"A Gypsy for Our Time"

Glynn Lockwood traveled the country and in all the places through which he passed, he never left without leaving a kind thought behind and maybe a haunting melody or song of love.

A friend to animals and a long time supporter of our environment in the tradition of Edward Abbey, Glynn was an outspoken advocate for the Trees and the wild places, which he loved. The red rock desserts, the mountains, beaches and rivers without number he treasured on his journies and remembered in his songs.

He lived by his principals and sometimes his wit(s) and traveled in high gypsy style all the while; ever ready to share a song and a glass of wine with any who should pass by his caravan, many of whom would become lifelong friends.

All of this and more is reflected in his music, the heartsong of one whose life was well spent and whose poet's soul lives on with those he touched.

During a trip to the giant redwoods near Trinidad, California, Glynn (as the Fairy Gypsy Godbrother) takes time out from tree-hugging to be savaged by loving hounds.

Following the forest expedition, the Fairy Gypsy Godbrother demonstrates the finer points of a traditional patshiv feast.

In one of them I shall be laughing
And so it will be
as if all the stars were laughing
When you look
at the sky at night

Subject: a brief tribute to Glynn in memorium

This is from old friends and troublemakers in Marin County - Glynn stopped by to visit Larry & Nancy Zee and me just a month or two ago.

We worked with Glynn back in the late 70s and early 80s, when I was a staff person at Bread & Roses, an organization that takes free live entertainment into institutions. I could always count on Glynn to contribute his time and talent to a show a month. I would book him and take him, introduce him and his band, if he came with one. He performed at drug rehab centers, psychiatric facilities, juvenile halls, county jails, hospitals for the terminally ill, and events for the developmentally disabled.

I always enjoyed taking Glynn to shows, because he had such a warm personality in addition to being a good musician and having a great voice. He always seemed to sense what was appropriate for which audience. I saw him be able to calm very mentally disturbed people by sitting quietly with his guitar, talking softly and then singing one of his songs as though he had just written it for that particular group.

Other times, I saw him stir 'em up with a band and his funny lines at Juvenile Hall and the County Jail.....

And we would often wind things up with a trip to the local Mill Valley Bar, the Sweetwater and some rounds and a discussion about what just took place, since performing in such venues was always an amazing experience. You were never sure what might happen. Just his cup of tea.

Even back then, Glynn had his caravan parked up on a firend's lot in Mill Valley and he took off on his adventures now and then. He also told me about the most beautiful and remote back country lake he had found in Yosemite.....drew a map for me,and named the lake himself....We eventually found it on a backpacking trip and it remains our favorite place in Yosemite....

Thanks, Glynn!
