| Bethanie’s 'D' Story written by Bethanie For a year straight I was getting sick, between 5 and 10 times a day. I lost so much weight and I was not eating right at all. I was tired all the time and not doing my usual activities. I went back and forth to every doctor around and they all said there was nothing wrong. Then one day about 3 weeks after my 10th birthday when I was at a fourth of July party, my sister’s mother said she thinks I might have diabetes. The next day my grandmother took me to the pediatrician and told her what my sister’s mother had said. They sent us over to the hospital for a blood test, about an hour later I got a call telling us to go to children's hospital. I spent a week there not knowing what diabetes was, until one doctor came in and sat down and talked to me, not my grandmother. He told me his story about growing up with diabetes, I thought it was the coolest thing to have a doctor who went through what I’m just beginning. Now that it has been almost 6 years (6 years on July 5th) I hate dealing with all this. Even though I’m on the pump now, I still hate it all, dealing with the high cholesterol and blood pressure and the ‘I am what I eat’. I’m exercising more and more and I still have all these problems, I wish it would just go away. Bethanie Thank you very much for your 'D' story Bethanie |
