For anyone who has not had the pleasure of listening to the New York Dolls I say you are really missing out! A real rock and roll fan has to experience the Dolls. They are the rockinest band ever! Better than the Stones, better than any one. Their career as a band was very short lived. The name of one of their few albums was Too Much Too Soon,1974, and that's exactly what happened so they say. I remember hearing they went bankrupt. Don't know if that's the truth of it. Sylvan and Johnny Thunder both did at least one album-I know I have the vinyl. Actually I dug around and found Johnny Thunders So Alone, 1978; Slyvain Sylvain, 1979 and Syl Sylvain and the Teardrops, 1981. DJ's David Johanson, 1978; In Style,1979; Here Comes the Night, 1981; and Sweet Revenge, 1984. And of course we all know what happened to David Johansen he became HOT HOT HOT Buster Poindexter,1987. I saw them a few times in concert at Philadelphia Theaters. Then there was the somewhat private concert. I'll explain. Outside of Fort Dix Army/McGuire Air Force Bases there was a club called the Satellite Lounge in Wrightstown,NJ. Mostly a place where the service men went for r&r to get off the base, so anybody could have been playing there they didn't much care. Well this place was open till 5a.m. so we often went there after 2 a.m. when our bars closed. The sign one week said the Dolls were gonna be there we thought OOOOOOOO. So we went down-waited and waited and waited and wondered and waited. Finally they showed up about 3-4 a.m. They said they had been detained by the NJ State Police coming down the turnpike. By this time there we maybe 50 people left, most half asleep but here we were front center for a GREAT show. No glam, no glitter, just T-shirts and jeans and ROCK AND ROLL!!! It was GREAT!!!I can only say the world of rock and roll has never been the same since the death of the Dolls... LETS BRING BACK SOMETHING THAT IS FUNKY BUT CHIC!!!( and of course I can't find any Doll midi's so we'll have to settle for NYNY) |
