george, 7 November 2000, gypsy bar

again george were supported by trouser trouser, but since i've decided i don't like trouser trouser (they get worse with every listen - this was my 3rd) and since i only saw two songs, i won't review them.

GEORGE:

george were great. i love george. the crowd was good in size but bloody shitty. they couldn't get into tilley's cos tilley's would only have them on a weekend, so they played the ruby lounge of the gypsy bar.

the ruby lounge is basically a teeny tiny room with a bar, two pool tables and a stage a foot high. they had 185 people there (i counted... no, i didn't), of which about a third were there to play pool and chat, despite paying $7 to get in!!

katie asked them to keep it down a bit after the first song, but it took them a while... they got there eventually though, towards the second half.

katie and tyrone both had singing problems - not used to the shitty canberra weather :) they still did pretty well, though, and both have amazing voices!!

i think the sound was different tonight to than at tilley's - more guitar, less keyboard, but you could still hear the keyboard. it wasn't a bad change, though - some of the songs sounded great with a bit more guitar, and the quiter ones were still in proportion.

if you've read the tilley's review you'll know that the first time i heard them i was impressed with their ability, but too tired to get into the songs. tonight i loved them. i think it also helped that i recognised them :)

overall george are a bloody good band to see live. katies voice can hit incredible heights, and the songs really are good. and the band has been really tight both times i've seen them. so go see them.
