Phil Moriarty is a Gadfly. No, that's not a type of insect... it's a band, made up of a combo of canberra and sydney musos. but tonight was just phil solo (with his backing band... solo as in not the gadflys.)
The lineup was ... can't remember his name, can't read his name :) some guy.. on keyboards (piano-y) and accordian, mike on clarinet and percussion (bongos and tambourines), david on violin and phil on guitar, with clarinet for one or two songs.
they played a few gadflys songs of the out of the bag album, no idea what the other songs are from cos i've never heard them before. This was the first time i'd seen any of the gadflys live.
although gadflys music can be pretty dreary some might say, and given the lineup you might expect the same, it wasn't... we were up and dancing to the side of stage for half of it!! mind you the rest of the crowd were just sitting like stunned mullets...
the band were all really laid back - not in their playing, they were really tight in that respect - they had fun. it was basically like they were playing in their lounge room, and there was no crowd there. not that they ignored the crowd, just that the fact there were people watching them didn't stop them being themselves.
david and mike were pretty funny... joking with eachother and doing all sorts of strange things to the songs... pretty entertaining.
during the half time break julie walked past the setlist on the side of the stage and managed to restrain herself from nicking it... until they decided hey, lets. You would think one person would subtly walk past and take it. but no, four of them decided to hover around it, with phil two feet away looking quite amused... they left it there in the end.
my first gadflys experience of any nature was just what i'd hoped... very bloody good. the thing with the gadflys/hayes brigade is they don't have support bands - they play two full sets themselves. more bands should do that!!
photos coming soon.
