| A special smile, a certain touch I never had a love I loved so much Dead. She was dead. She was gone forever. He would never be able to hold her in his arms ever again. “Baby, are you okay?” AJ McLean looked up at his mother, tears shining in his eyes. “She’s gone. I loved her so much. My baby girl…gone forever…(sniff) I’ll never see her again. She was my fiancée, Mom. We were gonna get married. We were gonna settle down, and have kids once we felt both of our careers were at the highest point.” When I look back, you’re everywhere Turn the page; you were there Denise McLean patted her son’s shoulder. “I know.” “I just miss her so much. And the worst part is that…I’ll never see her again. I’ll never touch her and hold her and kiss her…or love her.” He looked up at his mother, tears streaming down his face. “It’s like every time I look at the house, I see her smiling face. Every time I look at my tattoos, I see her tracing them like she always did. Every time I look up at the sky, I can see her smiling down at me… Like she’s encouraging me…” My very best friend, my summer day My only someone to depend on When I’ve lost my way They were the best of friends. They were complete opposites, but still the very best of friends. Aaliyah always knew she could depend on her best friend/lover AJ McLean. You came and answered my every prayer Turn the page; you were there ~Flashback~ It was his first confession of love to her. They were lying on the bed, their hands entangled, just talking about everything. “You know, Aaliyah, you seem to have answered my prayers. I’m so glad you’re here.” She smiled at him. “I’m glad I could, boo.” He smiled back at her. “You know baby girl, there’s something I have to tell you.” “And what’s that?” “I love you. I love you more than my best friend. I love you as a lover would.” His confession shocked her. It shocked her to silence. “Well, boo, I don’t know what to say.” “You don’t have to say anything. I just wanted you to know that I loved you more than my best friend.” ~End of Flashback~ AJ missed her so much. He remembers the day he proposed to her like it was yesterday. ~Flashback~ “Hurry, or we’ll miss it.” AJ said impatiently, holding the door open for Aaliyah, who was taking her time getting out of the car. Aaliyah laughed. “Miss what? Alexander James McLean what do you have up your sleeve?” “Just my arm, babygirl. Come on. I have a surprise to show you!” AJ led Aaliyah through the house, up the stairs, into the attic and outside to the stairs leading up to the roof. Just before she saw what his surprise was, AJ told Aaliyah to close her eyes and told her to wait exactly where she was standing. She obediently closed her eyes and waited until AJ told her she could open them. Never in a million years would Aaliyah have guessed what AJ’s surprise was. Before her AJ was standing in a black tuxedo with a red rose in his hands. Behind him was a small round table, two chairs, and candles with a single rose in a vase sitting in the middle of the table. On the ground about five feet from the table was a large blanket with two smaller blankets sitting on it. “Wow,” she breathed. “It’s beautiful.” “Have a seat.” AJ handed Aaliyah the rose, took her hand and gently tugged on it so she would follow him to her seat. He pulled out her seat and waited until she was comfortable to sit down in his own seat. “Close your eyes once more.” AJ requested. Aaliyah closed her eyes. Her heart was beating so fast. She wondered what AJ had planned next. “Ok, you may open them now.” Before her was the most delicious looking dessert she had ever seen. “Looks good.” In truth, the dessert didn’t appear that great at first glance. Aaliyah could tell that AJ had made the dessert himself. “What’s it supposed to be?” She suppressed a giggle. AJ feigned hurt. “It’s supposed to be a chocolate éclair. One of the most delicious desserts made in France.” He laughed. “I’m sure it doesn’t taste too good. I wouldn’t recommend eating it. Here,” AJ took away the ‘éclair’ and replaced it with a plate of homemade chocolate filled crepes dripping in chocolate syrup with whipped cream on top. “Wow. Now THIS looks good.” “Thank you. I made it myself.” Aaliyah was about to take a bite when she suddenly put her fork down. “Uh-oh. I’d better not eat it. For all I know you could be trying to poison me.” She teased him. AJ laughed. “I can assure you, Aaliyah, I would never try to poison you. Besides, I had a chef friend help me make these. They can’t be THAT bad!” Aaliyah giggled and picked up her fork once more. “Wow, this is really good.” She said after tasting it. AJ smiled. “Why, thank you. See, I’m not such a bad chef after all!” Aaliyah smiled. “No, you aren’t.” Just as Aaliyah had finished eating her dessert, AJ got down on one knee and reached inside his tux pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. “Aaliyah Dana Haughton, you have made me the happiest I have ever been in my entire life. I love with you all my heart and I would die if I ever lost you. You are my angel. I don’t know what I would do without you in my life. Would you do me the honor of making me the happiest man on earth by becoming my wife?” AJ opened the box to reveal a beautiful gold ring with a large diamond nestled on top with two small Emeralds on the side. Aaliyah gasped as tears gathered in the corners of her eyes. “I-I-I don’t know what to say, AJ! You’ve left me completely speechless.” “Say yes.” He whispered. Aaliyah smiled the biggest smile AJ had ever seen. “Of course. I’d love to be your wife, AJ.” AJ could’ve jumped up and whooped for joy that very moment. He could barely contain himself as he slipped the ring on Aaliyah’s finger. Aaliyah had never been happier. She knelt down to AJ’s level and hugged him tightly. “I love you.” She whispered in his ear, laying her head to rest on his shoulder. “I love you too.” He whispered as he gently lifted Aaliyah to her feet. AJ gave Aaliyah’s hands a quick squeeze before promising he’d back in a moment. He returned minutes later just as Aaliyah heard soft music playing. “May I have this dance?” Aaliyah nodded as she felt AJ’s arms slip around her waist. Aaliyah wrapped her arms around AJ’s neck and laid her head on his shoulder. After they had danced to the first song, Aaliyah recognized the song that was now playing. She looked up at AJ. “You didn’t.” AJ smiled innocently. “Didn’t do what?” Aaliyah groaned. “You did!” “Do what? Oh you mean play one of your songs.” AJ grinned. “I couldn’t help it! As soon as I heard this song I fell in love with your voice. The day I met you, it was love at first sight.” Aaliyah sighed and rested her head on AJ’s shoulder while quietly singing. “Baby you don't know, what you do to me. A slight breeze picked up and Aaliyah shivered. “You cold?” “A little. This dress certainly doesn’t help any.” She smiled up at AJ. Aaliyah was wearing a black silk spaghetti strap dress that hugged all her curves and stopped at the floor. Aaliyah fingered the rose petals in her hands. AJ sat down behind her and wrapped his arms around her as she leaned back against his chest and pulled a blanket up to her chin. He started humming a tune quietly in her ear. “Look into my eyes. You will see, what you mean to me. Search your heart. Search your soul. And when you find me there, you’ll search no more. Don’t tell me it’s not worth trying for. Can’t tell me it’s not worth dying. Do you have to leave?” Aaliyah smiled. “Yes I have to leave. How do you think I’m going to shoot my music video with the proper background if I don’t go to the Bahamas?” “You can stay here and shoot it at the beach here and then I could come home to my beautiful fiancée every day after recording.” AJ had asked her out the day after he told her loved her. Aaliyah couldn’t resist his puppy eyes pleading with her, so she said yes. She told him that she was only doing this to make him happy. But as the days and dates grew, Aaliyah found herself enjoying her relationship with AJ. She even found herself wanting to be around him just to see his smile. “Alex, I have to go. My plane is leaving soon. Alex. Please.” He pouted. “Can I least have a kiss before you leave?” Aaliyah sighed, and smiled. “Alright. But one last kiss.” They shared one last kiss and then he let her go. “Aaliyah!” She turned around. “What?” “I love you!” Aaliyah smiled. “I love you too!” And then she turned back around and boarded the plane. ~End of Flashback~ I can’t imagine how I would survive it I’ll find another reason to go on The whole time Aaliyah was in the Bahamas, AJ was depressed. He felt like he had let go of his babygirl forever. Never in his wildest dreams did AJ think he would ever be right when he thought he had let Aaliyah go forever. He knew she would die eventually, but he never could have even fathomed it would be this soon. And she was so young. He can’t find another reason to go on. He misses her so much. He can’t imagine how he’ll go on. It’s too hard. The pain to bear was too much. My one sure thing, my solid ground All I ever wanted was the love that we found When I look back you’re everywhere Turn the page; you were there As he sat there, crying, he just could see Aaliyah winking and smiling at him. She was his one sure thing. His solid ground. Everywhere he looked was his beautiful baby girl standing there with open arms. He walked upstairs to sit on the roof, staring out in the distance. It wasn’t the view he was looking at. All he was doing was sitting in complete silence thinking about Aaliyah and how much he loved her. He meant it when he said he wouldn’t be able to live without her in his life. He contemplated leaving earth just like she had, but he decided against it. Although he loved Aaliyah with all his heart, he couldn’t leave his family or friends like that. He just couldn’t do that to the world. No, he needed to be strong. There was a saying: Time heals all wounds. It would take a while for AJ to get over Aaliyah’s death, but he was sure that one day he’ll move on and even maybe some day he’d love again. He’ll always keep a part of Aaliyah in his heart but he couldn’t stop living or loving. She would want him to move on and be happy again. AJ looked up at the sky and saw his baby girl wink at him. He knew deep in his heart that the healing process had already begun. |
