Seeing RED: Some myths on red skin

You might have heard a lot of myths about red skin. Redness actually runs in the family, especially those with Celtic genes. But for others, redness comes from hormonal changes or worse -- sun damage.

The red you see on your face is created by tiny blood vessels in the skin dilating. People with light skin and a tendency to freckle are more likely to get red in the long run. If you are prone to redness, it's likely that you also turn bright red on hot days, when embarrassed (blushes) or when you exercise.

If you have occasional bouts of redness, there's really no reason to be alarmed. Redness isn't related to any serious underlying medical condition.

In fact, here are some myths associated with redness:

People who are red should not exercise.
FALSE. We need exercise to stay healthy.

People with red noses are drinkers.
FALSE. Alcohol can be a trigger for redness, but redness has often nothing to do with how much someone drinks.

To avoid the more dangerous form of red skin caused by sun damage, don't forget to apply full-spectrum sunblock everyday, whether indoors or outdoors, for protection against harmful UVA, UVB and UVC rays.

Godiva Bags Two Prestigious Awards

Manila, Philippines -- Skin care company Godiva Inc. was recently conferred two prestigious awards for being an outstanding manufacturer and distributor of natural skin care products. It was awarded the 2004 Top Skin Whitening Cream Award by the National Consumer Affairs Foundation in the recently concluded 21st Annual Year-Ender Excellence Awards.

The company was likewise bestowed the No. 1 Natural Skin Care Products (National) award by the 2004 National Shoppers’ Choice Annual Awards for its excellence in product quality, company reputation, brand recognition and consumer services.

Godiva’s Licorice Skin Whitening Cream – its flagship product – emerged as the best skin whitening product, besting other local skin whiteners in the market. The company’s use of licorice extract, a safe and effective ingredient for its whitening products, proved to be a fundamental part in its success locally and even internationally.

“We are honored to accept this recognition,” said Eduardo Rada, general manager of Godiva Inc., who received the citation during the awarding ceremonies. He adds, “We are confident that Godiva will continue to provide the Filipino consumer with safe and highly-effective natural skin care products in the coming years.”

Godiva is the first Filipino company to tap licorice as a main ingredient in whitening products. While other companies have thus followed suit, Godiva still remains at the forefront of skin whitening innovations as it continues to introduce more products in its skin care line. Aside from skin whitening, Godiva’s product line includes anti-aging, suncare, anti-acne, anti-stress and pregnancy care.

It currently sells its skin care products internationally through its online stores at www.godivaskincare.com and www.i-godiva.com, with markets spread throughout the United States, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

The 2004 National Shoppers’ Choice Annual Awards is spearheaded by the Asia-Pacific Shopper’s Choice Institute, Shoppers’ Choice Magazine, Essence Privilege Card, Hernz KPMR Marketing Inc. and the Asian-Philippine Association of Marketing Professionals. This is the first time Godiva has been recognized as an outstanding skin care company by the award-giving body.

Similarly, the Year-Ender Consumers Excellence Awards is an annual tribute to the Philippines’ best consumer products which have contributed significantly to the well-being of local consumers. Consumer and opinion surveys were conducted as basis for the selection of the awardees.

In 2002, Godiva was also bestowed three awards, including the National Consumers Excellence Award for Most Outstanding and Innovative Skin Care Product.
