The Myth on SPF
“I can double my sun time if I switch
from a SPF 15 product to one with SPF 30.”
WRONG. Your sun time, or the length
of time you can stay under the sun without getting sunburn, is not
doubled even if you switch from a lower SPF product to a high factor
sunscreen. According to Daniel McKenzie, M.D., a dermatologist at
Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, a SPF 30
sunscreen only gives 2% more protection than a SPF 15 product. That is,
products rated with SPF 15 can shield against 94% of UVB rays; SPF 30,
96%; and, SPF 40, 97%.
And take note: a SPF label only tells the
estimated protection you can get from a product against UVB rays that
cause “sunburn”. It doesn’t tell the sunscreen’s effectiveness against
UVA rays that cause wrinkles, decreased skin elasticity, and sun spots.
To ensure your skin is protected against
both UVA and UVB rays, use products with Zinc Oxide and
Titanium Dioxide. Like a mirror, Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide
reflect UV rays away from the skin by forming a “barrier” on the skin’s
surface.
