What You Should Know About Sun Spots

If you’re always exposed to the sun without protection when you were younger, chances are when you reach your early 30s, you’ll begin to develop sun spots.

What are Sun Spots?

Sun spots –- also called age spots, liver spots (although they do not have any connection with the liver or its function), and solar lentigines in medical terms -- are brown-black flat spots seen in sun-exposed areas like the face, hands, forearms, trunk, and back. They tend to get darker with sun-exposure (thus the term “sun”). This is because these spots are actual deposits of melanin, the element that determines the skin’s color. By the way, aside from giving our skin its color, melanin is important because they protect people from UV (ultraviolet) rays of the sun. That is, melanin absorbs UV lights before they reach deeper layers of our skin, thereby preventing damage to our cells.

Although sun spots are usually seen among people aged 30-50 years (thus, the term “age”), they are now seen in youth because of increased exposure to ultraviolet (UV) lights (thanks, again, to the sun!).

"Does Having Sun Spots Mean Something?"

Sun spots are benign, meaning they are not life-threatening. Nevertheless, having sun spots may mean you have a sensitive skin that is more prone to sun damage, like skin cancer. Fair skinned people, for example, are more prone to develop sun spots. This is because their skin has less melanin. The darker the skin, the more melanin it has. This is why skin cancer is more prevalent among white populations.

That’s why, if you're nervous about a suspicious pigmented spot, see a physician or dermatologist right away! They may not be benign spots anymore, you know. Anyway, it's always better to err on the side of caution.

"Can I Get Rid of My Sun Spots?"

Not all are comfortable with sun spots. Given a chance, some would likely get rid of them. And there’s nothing wrong with that!

Sun spots had long been associated with aging, therefore many still think that having sun spots mean you're already old. While getting old is no problem and is in fact entering a wonderful phase of life, many still think of “youth” and physical appearance highly than other essential things. Therefore, being “blemished” sun spots may cause distress to some extent.

There’s also the simple truth that some of these spots don’t actually look great on the skin!

Godiva Skin Station is aware of these. And because we always want to make you feel and look good, we offer a safe, effective, and painless way of removing sun spots. Introducing Godiva Skin Station Q-switched Nd:YAG Laser treatment.
