What Is Mental Health?

This may seem like an odd question to ask but, I don't think that the answer is considered very often and I think some people are unsure as to it's actual definition In order to talk about mental ill health I think that it is vital to define what normal mental health actually is:

The successful performance of mental functioning, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity, from early childhood until late life.  Mental health is the springboard of thinking and communication skills, learning, emotional growth, resillience and self-esteem.
What Is Mental Illness?

Mental illness is the term that refers collectively to all mental disorders.  Mental disorders are health conditions characterized by alterations in thinking, mood and behaviour (or some combination thereof) associated by distress and/or impaired functioning.

On this page I am going to explore some common mental health problems and mental illnesses.  There is no shame in having a mental illness, although all too often there is because of people's reluctance to take it as a serious problem that affects real people.  This is very sad and it is very difficult to change people's views on mental illness, until of course they experience it themselves, as one in five people will do in a year.  Mental illness and it's surrounding taboo's can be devastating.  It can make people believe that they are ill because of a personal flaw - as a result many people are reluctant to seek help and they will perhaps become more ill.  Up to six percent of people with a mental illness will kill themselves and i'm sure this number would decrease if appropriate help was available to everyone and if mental illness was more widely spoken about.  I hope people find this page helpful.
