Sailor Venus and Sailor Moon share many likenesses as far as physical appearances go which also plays a major part in the Sailor Moon series. Sailor Venus acted as a decoy many times to save Sailor Moon. Why was she chosen as the Sailor to look most like Sailor Moon though? Well, it may have something to do with the actual planets. "Venus is the brightest object in the night sky after our moon. From Earth, Venus seems to change its shape just as our moon does." (Our Solar System, Seymour Simon, 1992, pg. 17.) Similarities between Venus, the Earth, and Earth's moon are often mentioned in books dealing with the solar system.
Sailor Venus' personality and appearance stems from Roman mythology. Naoko expanded on the idea of the planet Venus being named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. This is especially evident with Super Sailor Venus' attack "Love and Beauty Shock". Sailor Venus is beautiful, bubbly, charming, flirtatious, sweet, vain, and she "falls in love" often and easily. When you try to envision the Roman goddess Venus, someone very much like Sailor Venus would come to mind.
As the Princess of Venus, Minako is dressed all in yellow and she has a bow in her hair, a yellow one with a red rose in the center. Her castle is called Magellan Castle and it is located on her planet. Magellan is not a moon of Venus because Venus has no moons. Magellan is in truth the name of the spacecraft that has been orbiting Venus and taking photographs of it since August 10, 1990.
The color of Sailor Venus' planet is a blend of orange, yellowish-orange, and reddish-orange. I believe that this is why Naoko picked most of the Sailor colors that she did for Sailor Venus. It is also not surprising that Minako's favorite gem is topaz which is golden in color.
