The Elman family moved to the USA , and in 1923 Mischa Elman became an American citizen . The appearance of Jascha Heifetz on the scene had a devastating impact on the career of many a violinist . Elman remained a highly popular concert artist , sometimes playing as many as 107 concerts in 29 weeks , appearing in recital , with orchestra and in duo concerts with Eugene Ysaye . But Heifetz , with his glittering , powerful , more interpretively objective style would ultimately steer the violin world away from Elman's "elastic rubato , expressive rallentando and instinctive portamento" (Tully Potter) . The press of the period was fond of speculating about the violinist's personal life . When one of London newspapers announced that Elman would interview prospective brides in his hotel he was " besieged by 68 blonde young English misses who ... offered to marry him instantly " . Needless to say , there was absolutely no truth to the story . |
