Mr Victor Grieve (A.L.C.M.)




Began his musical career as a fourth generation military musician joining the Gordon Highlanders as a boy musician in 1954. He received much of his training at the Royal Military School of Music (Kneller Hall) and also studied at the London College of Music and Trinity College London.

He was nine years a member of the Sydney and Queensland Symphony Orchestras. Taking part in overseas tours to Asia and Europe. In 1974 he was awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to study in Europe under Prof. Hermann Baumann, he chose to use part of his award to study Youth Orchestras and Wind Bands in the U.K., France, Holland, Germany, U.S.A. and Scandinavia.

Victor Grieve is an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board, a position he has held for the past 20 years.

In 1978 at the invitation of the Department of Foreign Affairs, he lectured in music at the University of the Phillippines and the University of the East in Manila.

Mr Grieve is as former Lecturer in Music at Mitchell College of Advanced Education and the N.S.W. Conservatorium of Music, he was the Director of Music to the Sydney City Council 1986-1989 when he founded the international Year of Youth Concert Band and the City of Sydney Bicentennial Concert Band which toured to France and the U.K., U.S.A., Japan and Canada. Mr Grieve also formed the "Sydney Horn Club", the "Canzona Brass Players of Sydney", Bathurst Concert Band, City of Newcastle Concert Band and many School Bands since 1967.

In 1984, 1987, 1989 and 2002 he led the Hornsby Concert Band tours to Japan, Canada and America. And In 1989 to Europe for the World Championships where the Band gained silver and bronze medals. In 1993 he returned the Band to the World Championships to gain two silvers and one bronze medal. In 1993, and 1997 to London for the Royal Tournament. In Paris 1997 he led the band for a relighting of the flame ceremony of the unknown soldier at the Arc De Triomphe.
In Febuary 2000, the band led by Victor, accepted the invitation to perform in Chinese New Year Celebrations in Hong Hong.
In June/July 2000 the Victor led the band on a 4 week tour of Europe and returned to Europe in June/July 2003 to lead the band in a 3 week tour of Italy and France.

Mr Grieve is an author of published articles on Wind Bands and composer of a number of compositions for Band.
