John was the platoon commander for second platoon from July 1969 until his death October 10, 1969 in the Que Son Mountains some 25 miles south west of Danang.
He was shot in the head and only lived a few minutes. David "Peewee" Kling was shot in the hand (as I'm remembering things) at the same time. This was his third purple heart so he was sent home. I remember talking to him as he was waiting to be medivaced out that evening or the next morning. |
