Tom Ferguson at Tugboat.

I think Tom cultivated this look.  Though by nature he was a rather outgoing fellow.  But he pretty much lived by what he called "The Five Rules of the Marine Corps" which rather limited his personal interactions.

THE FIVE RULES OF THE MARINE CORPS
1.  A Marine on duty has no friends.
2.  When two or more Marines are together there is a junior and a senior.
3. ???????
4.  If you're tired, you'll sleep; if you're hungry you'll eat; if you don't, you're not.
5. If you fuck up - stand by for the ram.

Can't remember what number 3 is.  If anyone out there knows what if is let me know.
Tom loved being in Vietnam.  I think he must have been there close to 4 years altogether.  He had 2 years in the Army in Vietnam.  Got out for a while and found that (honest to God I remember him telling me this), "I was bored, bilious, and discontent."  He really did talk like that.  He joined the Corps when the Army wouldn't promise him Vietnam.  He spent 8 months with Golf before he was wounded in August 1969.  In late 1970 I received a letter from him and he had been back in Vietnam for some time then.  Jake Sphon ran into him at Camp Pendleton in 1971 and Tom was a Staff Sgt. then.  He told Jake that he was getting out of the Corps since they wouldn't send him back to Vietnam.

Taken at Tugboat.  Doc David Dean in front and Sgt. Jake Sphon in the rear.

Looks like its lunch time.

Not sure where this was taken.  Sort of looks like the country around LZ Ross.
