In 1994, Buena Vista Television along with Disney released an animated series that broke the mold of the traditional Disney cartoon with a dramatic plot, an ethnically diverse cast, good animation, and one of the finest ensembles of vioce talent ever assembled. It received critical acclaim and a devoted fan following. The Emmy-nominated Gargoyles is one of the few dramatic animated series on the air. One thousand years ago, creatures known as gargoyles existed among us. By day, they sleep as stone statues sitting atop castle towers. By night, they are living, breathing, intelligent beings. Blessed with wings, talons, and great strength and endurance, gargoyles have an instinctive nature to protect the innocent. They protect the humans during the night and the humans protect them during the day. After being betrayed by the humans they swore to protect, most of the gargoyles were destroyed as they slept during the day by invading Vikings. The six surviving gargoyles were frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years. They were to remain in permanent stone sleep until the castle they protected was raised above the clouds. Only then would the spell be broken, causing these creatures to live again. This spell lasted for 1000 years. The castle along with the gargoyles were moved from Scotland to Manhattan and set atop the tallest building in the world, waking the surviving gargyoles from thier sleep. They quickly make a few allies and many enemies as they try to adapt to their new surroundings. Gargoyles quickly became a hit with fans and lasted for two more seasons. Unfortunately, in early 1997 Buena Vista Television cancelled Gargoyles, despite the millions of fans who loved it.
