OUR CLUB EMBLEM: Stenoglottis fimbriata

Stenoglottis comes from the Greek stenos (narrow) glotta (a tongue) with reference to the narrow irregular lobes of the labellum. This genus of three species comes from eastern, central and southern Africa. Two of the three species are well known in choice collections, but S. zambesiaca from Nyasaland (Malawi) is exceedingly rare. These terrestrial herbs have fleshy, tuber like roots, short stems, and the leaves form a basal rosette.

Inflorescence is erect and many flowered. The flowers are interesting and are coloured pink with dark spots. Sepals are adnate to the column and labellum for a short length, then are spreading. Petals are wider than sepals and are erect. The labellum is united to the column with or without the spur; it is wedge shaped with three to seven lobes or tails.

Culture: Compost in small well drained pots. Plants require moist, shady conditions. The leaves die back during and after fIowering. Supply a little water until new growth appears.
