Rob was born Wednesday September 30, 1964 to Robert and Cathy Takac. Robby started his music career at the age of two, when he received a ukulele from his grandmother. Robby and his family lived in Orchard Park (a southern suburb of Buffalo), NY, where he started school at Ellicott Road School. He and his family later moved to West Seneca (another suburb of Buffalo) where he attended Ebenezer School. His mother taught the 6th grade, and his father was an artist-turned banker. In school Rob played the trombone and took part in other activities such as baseball, and boy scouts. Robby went to a few other schools in the district, and finally graduated from West Seneca East in 1983.

After high school, Robby went to Medaille College in Buffalo, where he got a degree in communications. While there, he got several internships, which lead him to be a disc jockey. Before becoming famous, Rob had jobs, which included, delivering pizzas, and telemarketing.

Around 1985, Rob met John through his cousin- they immediately hit it off. Along with Rob's friend, George Tutuska, the three formed a band called the Sex Maggots. The name was later changed to the Goo Goo Dolls, which thanks to a night of drinks, was picked from the back of a True Detectives Magazine.

Rob originally sang all of the Goo Goo Dolls' songs, but with his encouragement John started to write and sing.
