As you may know, Sonic the Hedgehog has such a heavy influence that the fans have even gone beyond than the usual fandom and the new concept, Fancharacter was born. This is excessively and commonly found throughout any Sonic fansite or wherever the place that a Fancharacter would hail from. The most significant event for fans was the elusive Sonic Adventure 2 for DC (Sonic Adventure 2: Battle for GC) as the appearance of the Jet black, cool red hedgehog of a bad-ass loner, Shadow the Hedgehog, formerly known as Project: Shadow but apart from that and from then, there was a huge sprouting of Fancharacters everywhere in which most were fan response to Shadow the Hedgehog.
As time went by and the numbers of Fancharacters didn't stop growing, the whole Fancharacter thing was becoming 'flat' and very boring as the increasing numbers of Fancharacters were poorly designed or unoriginal, though inevitably unstoppable, there were the few that actually stood from the rest (Rogue the Bat is one example, designed by Dawns Best who does the pencilling for Archie Comic's Sonic the Hedgehog: Way past cool comic's Knuckles' side stories.)*phew* Of course you now see Rogue the Bat in the games, Anime and the comics ever since Sonic Adventure 2 was set out.
Back onto the Fancharacters. Too many became way too unoriginal and cliched, especially those that are of a hedgehog species type of Fancharacter *raises hand*. Sad as it may be but it's the truth, at least 75% of Sonic Fancharacters are hedgehogs... or so research says that it is but do people think originality is? Surely it isn't making your fancharacter with godly like powers or elemental crap like as if they were Captain Planet or something. Some even misuse Fancharacters, they create multiple fancharacters even if they weren't original at all, some may even say that originality is for sissies which is sorta true in a way but not morally, that's for sure. Originality is an inventive product; something that isn't a copy; something that is eccentric and unusual (in an appealing way). Not crap like 'Martial Status: Married (to Shadow)' that's low, stupid and unoriginal, of course everyone is try to give their characters a special yet intimate relationship with official characters, not a very good move bro. The only exception to that is either they have appeared in Official Sonic TEAM games or in the Comics though that'll be in a million years or so for that to happen, correct me if I'm wrong.
There is another thing that people ignore when creating their Fancharacters is realism. No matter how appealing their fancharacters are, so much that it was if their characters existed in fairy-land or something, you gotta be realistic at least with the basic principles of Science and Physics. Sonic and co. should be the only ones that exemplifies the almost boundary-breaking abilities, the only exception is Big the Cat, there is nothing unnatural about him, except for the fact that he is one hell of a fat cat. He's original yet not given anything special about him, which is why I find him appealing though there isn't much fandom of Big the Cat due to his simplicity as he wants to live the easy life, well doesn't matter, ultimately, it's all about the Blue Blur.
A most significant flaw of the fancharacters are that they are so inconsiderate with their characters when it comes to the abilities explanation. For example, Chaos Control. WTF are you thinking people....? only Sonic and Shadow are allowed to manipulate this ability, yet some people these days never learn the first time... Chaos Control is barely physically possible which is why Sonic and Shadow should be the only two who can do so and it should stay like that. Word of advice people, if you're gonna give your character something that is scientifically challengable, at least study about it damnit and only choose one aspect, don't make them Captain Planet or something godly like, ok? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyways, that's enough of that. That was just a very breif introduction to the whole Fancharacter concept. I too am currently creating a Fancharacter though, needs a lot of tuning up. I have been releasing my Fancharacter every now and then into the public to see the public response to my fancharacter.
His name is Echono Lihte, a hedgehog (yes a hedgehog, though it is an unoriginal species for a fancharacter, the exception would be is that you make it an original hedgehog, not one that is practically a Sonic look-alike...) but he yet to be officially my Fancharacter.
Give me until Winter 2006, too long? too bad okay, that's how you have to wait, besides, good things take time, no? |
