Goodhue County HFH

Goodhue County HFH is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest five hundred hours of labor - 'sweat equity' - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Spaghetti Supper 2004! Due to a full summer building schedule, Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity’s annual spring fundraising dinner has been moved to the fall. On September 13, 2004, Habitat for Humanity will host their seventh annual spaghetti supper at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing. Between 4:30 and 7:00 pm, friends will be able to celebrate the summer building projects, listen to music from the High Street Strings, and enjoy spaghetti, desert, and beverages. Tickets can be purchased from Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity board members, at the Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity office in the Friendship House at 480 W 8th Street (651-388-9360 x 32) or at the door. All proceeds go to support the construction of simple, decent, affordable houses with low-income families in Goodhue County who may otherwise never have the opportunity to own their own homes. Projects this year include a house at 1814 Bush Street in Red Wing, 280 East Third Street in Zumbrota, and a house planned for Central Avenue in Red Wing to begin construction this fall. With these 2004 projects, Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity will have built 17 houses in Goodhue County since 1993, housing over 75 people. In addition, contributions from Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity have provided funds for the construction of 15 houses in Nicaragua.

Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity is pleased to annouce the construction of three houses during 2004. On April 13, 2004 the Lafferty-Rush family broke ground for their house at 1814 Bush Street in Red Wing. Wells-Fargo is generously supporting the Lafferty-Rush project. On May 16, 2004 the Mollenhauer family broke ground for their house at 280 East Third Street in Zumbrota. Their house will receive generous support from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and area Lutheran congregations. To learn more, please visit: Mollenhauer Build. In late summer 2004, the Ruby family will break ground on their home at 1109 Central Avenue in Red Wing. This project will receive support from District 5M-1 Lions. We are in need of a construction manager for our upcoming house in Red Wing. The construction manager is responsible for developing detailed construction schedules, managing the work site, explaining tasks, supervising volunteers, instructing homeowners, inspecting and assessing building sites, managing subcontractors, ordering materials, record keeping, and attending building committee meetings. The construction manager must be available every Saturday and one night a week until the house is completed. The position pays $3,000 per house.

We are also seeking individuals to serve on our Public Relations, Fundrasing, and and Volunteer Committees. Individuals who are interested in the work of Habitat, but do not want to work on the building site are encouraged to take part in committee activities. The time commitment varies by committee, but can be a very rewarding experience to see the joy that a Habitat home brings to the partner families.

If you are interested in a future Construction Manager position, volunteering on a committee, with office work or at the work site, please call our office at 651-388-9360 x 32. If no one is available, then please leave a message and we will get back to you.
