The World of Whales

 Introduction

Look up whales and get a definition to what a whale is. Write it on a piece of paper and save for later.

Digging Deeper

1. Look for some pictures of different whales. Go to this website and look at the left sidebar and click on Whale info sheets. http://www.allaboutwhales.com/subjects/whales/

    a. Draw or print off of the computer pictures of 5 different whales. (Put 1 picture on a page and answer questions about that whale on that page too.)

    b. Record the name of each one. Write the scientific name and the common name if possible. Go to this website and look at the left sidebar and click on Whale info. sheets  and find the picture of the whale and click on it. Look for the name and answers to the questions below.

   c.  Write down any facts you know about each one. Try to find the answers to these questions.

          1. What is the average length of this species?

          2.  What is the average weight of this species?

          3. What is the color?

          4. How long does it live?

          5.  What does it eat?

6.      How fast does it move?

7.      Does it migrate?

8. Where does it live (what part of the world)?

    d. Print a copy of the world map found at this website. http://www.oocities.org/homeschoolforms/MapoftheWorld.PDF

Look on the map and locate where whale #1 lives on the map and mark with red. Find where whale #2 lives and mark with blue. Do this with the other 3 whales. Use a different color for each whale.  If the whale migrates, then mark where it migrates to and the path it takes if known with dotted lines (use the same color that you used to mark where it lived)

    e. Take a ruler and draw a scale picture of the 5 different whales and compare them to each other in size.

Whale vs. Fish

1. How are they different?

2. How are they the same?

3.  Print out the comparison worksheet at this website and complete.

Finding out more

Read at least 4 books about whales. (At least 3 must be nonfiction)

Looking at the Bible

Read Jonah 1:1- 3:3.

Copy Jonah 1:17 on a piece of paper and illustrate it. Nice handwriting.

Answer these questions.

What swallowed Jonah?

Was it a whale?  (What does the Bible say it was?)

Use a topical index (some Bibles have one of these in the front) and look up whales. Where else in the Bible is whales mentioned? Copy this verse on a piece of paper and illustrate it.

Take a moment to think about a whale.  Think of what a magnificent creature it is that God created. Some of the biggest whales eat things that are so small that we can’t see them. Yet they know what to eat and where to find it. God takes care of the whales and other sea creatures as well as everything else.

Read Matthew 10:29,31. Jesus is telling about how a sparrow falling to the ground does not go unnoticed by God. In verse 31, He points out that we are more valuable then the sparrows.

If God can do all of these things, then do you think He can help you with even our smallest needs and problems.
