He was found by Bucky, Toro, and the other Young Allies and inducted into the group. The team thought that he was simply another Atlantean like Namor. The clone adopted the nickname that they gave him, "Subbie", as his own. When Namor found out about Subbie, he went to meet the boy. After taking a tissue sample of Subbie's back to Atlantis, Namor came to a conclusion about what Subbie was. Knowing Atlantean law about clones, Namor sent Subbie away and told him never to come back. Subbie grew up alone as he wandered the seas. It was not until he heard that Namor had disappeared did he make his presence known. He decided to take Namor's place as the scourge of the seas, but he would do it for the benefit of America - the only home he had ever, albeit briefly, known. Namora began hearing rumors about sightings of Namor. She went to the Avengers for help. At the same time, the US government was dealing with Soviet anger over attacks upon Communist ships. The Avengers, with the aid of Toro, were sent to investigate the attacks. The clone's true identity was determined.
