Chapter 10

There was no way Quinn was ready to tell Nick about MacKenzie.  She knew eventually she had to, if for no other reason that for Mac but she just wasn't ready yet.  Elliott walked back into the living room with a tray of homemade enchiladas,
"Hey, they look better than they smell babe."  He smiled,
"Well, I won't get the big head cause it's from you.  You aren't the best of cooks and you're a garbage disposal, you'll eat anything."  She rolled her eyes,
"Just for that, I won't cook for you."  He laughed,
"You promise?"  His cell phone rang,
"I'll be back."  When he walked into the master bedroom James turned to her,
"Quinn, has Mac's father tried to contact you?"  She sighed, she's had this conversation with him a couple of times and she didn't want to have it anymore,
"No, he hasn't."  He frowned and shook his head,
"And he does know for sure that you had Mac already?"  She turned to look at him,
"Yes James ok?  I don't want to talk about it?"  It was a sensitive issue with him and it brought back alot of hurt for him.  His mother was white and his dad was black; he never met his father because he ran out on his mother and his mother's family disowned her for not only dating a black man but bringing a chiild into the world with him.
"I just don't understand how people can be so fucking irresponsible."  She turned her entire body,
"Oh so I'm fucking irresponsible?"  Just then Elliott walked back into the room but James didn't see him, his back towards Elliott,
"Yes, you are.  Having an unplanned baby is irresponsible but many people go through that and it doesn't make you a bad person.  I just don't understand why you won't at least make him financially support Mac.  You got it good now but what if something should happen to you?  Why aren't you making him pay?"  James and his mother struggled, lived in shelters and I know he was probably asking me things and expressing feelings he had for his own mother and father,
"Because I don't want it."  He sighed,
"Do you know who the father is?"  She stood up and shook her head, she wasn't going to listen to this anymore,
"Elliott, the food is great."  James turned and sighed as he turned to see Elliott walking back into the room,
"Elliott, do you know who Mac's father is?"  Elliott looked at a spot on the wall as he slowly shook his head,
"James, I don't want to get in the middle of this."  Quinn walked over and stood before James,
"Get out."  James stood,
"What?  Why can't you just tell me?"  Tears fell down Quinn's face,
"You have no right to put Elliott in that position. And if you think I'm such a whore that I don't know who my child's father is you shouldn't be with me.  It's none of your business James, when or if I feel like telling you, I will.  And not a minute sooner.  Now please just leave."  He didn't bother to try and convince her to let him stay, he simply shook his head,
"I'm sorry I upset you."  He walked over to Elliott,
"Man, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have put you in the middle."  He walked to the door and before he left he turned and looked at Quinn,
"I'll call you tomorrow."  She simply stood there with her arms crossed and remained silent.  Elliott walked over and wrapped his arms around her,
"I'm not bitching at you but you need to tell Nick.  Don't let whatever you feel for Nick screw up another relationship."  She didn't say anything and he pulled back and looked into her eyes, holding her face in his hands so she couldn't look away,
"This is not about you, this is about his right, Mac's right.  Your father means everything to you, I can't believe you're going to deny Mac the chance to have what you have with your father."  She shook her head,
"Nick isn't the man my father is, she'll be better off without him."  He shook his head and sighed,
"You don't actually believe that.  James' father wasn't in his life, thats what you told me, and look at him.  It still hurts him.  You don't know what kind of man your father was when he was young and you don't know what kind of man Nick can be." She pulled away from him and sat on the couch,
"Great, bad enough Nick got me fat one time, now I'm going fat again from all this eating."  A lot of people lost their appetite when they were upset, she loved to eat when she was in pain.  It was like an escape,
"Do you want me to make you a salad?"  She frowned at him,
"No but you can get me a cheesecake, with strawberry topping from The Cheesecake Factory."  He stood up and grabbed his keys,
"This is only because I love you."  She smiled,
"And I love you."  She called out to him as he opened the door,
"Why couldn't I be Madonna and you be Rupert Everett?"  He laughed, he knew she was talking about the movie they did together where she ended of pregnant by her gay best friend,
"Honey, no matter how drunk I get, I ain't having sex with you."  He laughed as she groaned and threw a pillow at him.  Just as she was about to run over to him Mac began to cry,
"See?  Mac says to stop trying to abuse me."  He closed the door and she shook her head as she walked into the nursery.
