Chapter 35

They moved Mac to a permanent room and Quinn sat in her room waiting for the specialists and other doctors to come back in the room and let her know what was going on with her daughter.  Elliott came back into the room and ran his hand over her head,
"Here, you need to eat something."  She shook her head, the last thing she wanted was something to eat, she just wanted her little girl to be ok,
"I'm not hungry."  He shook his head and pulled the table in front of her and placed the tray on the table,
"You are going to eat, you haven't eaten all day."  She looked up at him, she knew he was only looking out for her,
"Elliott, I'm not-"  He shook his head,
"Hey, the doctors are taking care of Mac and I'm taking care of you.  Come on, its only soup."  She nodded and placed her feet on the floor, she picked up the spoon but could only stir it around in the bowl, not ready to try it.  Elliott sat on the arm of the chair,
"I used your phone and called Nick and Larry."  She wasn't angry, she was grateful actually,
"What did they say?"  He shook his head,
"Nick's phone was off and I got Larry's voice mail and left a message."  Her face dropped and he stood up,
"I'm going to go and get you some more clothes and while I'm out I'll check to see if they called back.  I wish you could use your phones in this place."  He leaned down and kissed her on the top of her head,
"I'll call again and give them the room number."  She simply nodded and he sighed,
"Is there anything specific you want from home?"  She shook her head as she sat in a trance and stared at the wall, the soup forgotten.
"Where are your keys?"  She sighed,
"We came in the ambulance."  He nodded,
"I know but I need to get in the house."  She looked over at him,
"I didn't bring my keys."  She simply ran out of the house, following closely behind the EMTS as they rushed her daughter away,
"Did you lock the door?"  She looked over at him and he knew from the look on her face she was unsure of what she did last night,
"Ok, I'll go over and take care of everything."  She pushed the table away after he walked out and began to cry all over again.

Late afternoon arrived and Quinn picked up the phone in Mac's hospital room and dialed her parent's house collect, she had tried earlier but she forgot her parents were at work, it didn't even enter her mind at the time.  She gave her name to the operator and waited for her parents to answer the phone,
             "Hello?"  She cleared her throat,
"Hi mom." She could hear the anxiety in her mother's voice,
"Why are you calling me collect?  What's wrong?"  Just like a mother to worry, but she was right,
"Mac stopped breathing last night, we're still at the hospital, they think it's her heart."   Saying the words made her cry all over again and she couldn't control the sobs,
"Oh God, calm down.  What hospital, what room?"  Her mom waited patiently as she struggled to stop the tears,
"Jackson Memorial, room 814."  She looked around the cold room as she wiped her nose,
"Ok baby, your dad is at work, I'll call him and have him get home now.  We're leaving in the next hour.  Have you called Johnny?"  Her brother, she hadn't thought about calling him, she barely remembered Nick and her parents,
"No, I forgot, I'm sorry.  I'm sorry I didn't call you sooner."  How could she not call her family?  They were the ones who had been there for her and Mac, not Nick.  He didn't even deserve to know.
"Honey don't worry about it.  We're on our way, I'll call Johnny and he'll be there too.  You just hold on, ok?  Is James there?"  James, there was another person she forgot to call.
"No, I forgot, but Elliott is here."  Her mom liked Elliott and she knew that her mother knowing that Elliott was there would be comforting for her as she made her way down to Miami,
"Ok, you just let Elliott take care of you.  We're on our way ok?"  She sniffled,
"Ok mom."  There was something about talking to your mother that made you bawl like a little baby no matter how old you were.  After she gathered herself together she picked up the phone again dialed James' office number, not waiting for him to finish his greeting,
"James, its Quinn, I'm at the hospital Mac, she stopped breathing last night and we've been here all night and all day."  She knew he would be upset because she didn't call him sooner,
"Is she ok?  Why didn't you call me last night?  Where are you?"  The crying started all over again,
"They keep running tests.  I'm at Jackson, room 814." She could barely say anything before he hung up,
"I'm on my way."  That was it, he was on his way, just like that and she wasn't even sure if Nick knew his daughter was in trouble.  Since she was in the dialing mood she wondered who else she needed to call.  Her mother was taking care of her brother, Elliott was there, Chris.  She looked at the clock but she couldn't call her yet, she was still at work and she couldn't call her collect at work.  James was leaving work, work, she didn't go to work today.  She picked up the phone and dialed her boss' extension, ignoring his speech,
"...Leonard Underwood speaking."  She cleared her throat,
"Hi, this is Quinn, I'm sorry I didn't come to work, my daughter is in the hospital."  She knew she wasn't going to get in trouble but she didnt want to cause a problem at work,
"I know, your friend called this morning and let us know what was going on.  How is she doing now?"  She smiled slightly, Elliott was the best friend she had ever had in her life,
              "I don't know, they're still running tests."
"Well, keep us updated and let us know what we can do.  Is there anything you need?"
She smiled, thinking of the wonderful support system she had,
"No, I'm ok.  I'm going to take the week off, vacation.  If I need to do anything after that I'll let you know Friday."  They hung up and she closed her eyes, but only for a moment before Elliott walked back in with two small suitcases, one of which looked like her own,
"Sorry it took so long.  I went by my place and got some stuff then went over to your place."  He placed the bags down,
"The door was closed but it was unlocked.  I packed you some clothes and I brought a couple of toys for Mac."  She smiled at him,
"Thank you so much, and thank you for calling my boss this morning."  He smiled,
"It was nothing.  I brought your wallet too."  She shook her head,
"You're perfect you know that?"  He smiled,
              "I know."
