Chapter 46

Quinn was standing in Mac's room with her father and one of Mac's doctors.  She turned and looked at him,
"Ok, so how is she now?  Will she be able to have the surgery soon?"  Dr. Elder smiled slightly,
"In another couple of days, if she remains steady she should be just fine for surgery."  Quinn glanced at her father but her eyes quickly fell back on the doctor,
"What do you mean if she remains steady?  What does that mean?"  He shook his head,
"Nothing, I don't suspect anything is going to happen." Quinn nodded and crossed her arms over her chest,
"So, what happens if she can't have the surgery in the next couple of days?"  He looked over in Mac's bed and smiled at Quinn,
"Ms. Garner, let's not get ahead of ourselves.  MacKenzie is stable right now.  Nothing drastic will happen to her in the next week or so if she doesn't have the surgery."  Quinn nodded and sighed deeply,
"I'm sorry, this is all just too much."  He placed his hand on her shoulder,
"I understand.  If you have anymore questions let me know ok?"  She nodded and turned her attention to Mac as he walked out.
"Oh Ms. Garner."  She turned and waited for him to continue,
"Her father's blood is a match.  Could you let him know we'll need to draw more?  We'll be using his for her surgery."  Her stomach dropped as she nodded,
"Oh, ok I'll let him know."  He nodded and walked out the door.  He doesn't realize what he just did, she thought as she turned to see her father's intense eyes focused on her,
"Her father?  Mac's father was here?"  Quinn nodded her head as she studied her father's face,
"He still is here."  She had been lying to her dad since the moment he met Nick and she knew he would be disappointed in her,
"Where is he?"  She took and deep breath and looked down at MacKenzie,
"Ok, well you know Mac's dad is white."  He shook his head,
"Of course, get on with it Quinn and tell me now.  Who is Mac's dad?"  She couldn't bare to look at her father and kept her eyes on Mac,
"Nick."  She held her breath and waited,
"The Backstreet Boy?  Your daughter's father is a Backstreet Boy?"  She nodded her head and the tears that she had been holding back fell down her face,
"Yes."  she whispered.  She licked her lips and looked up at him,
"I'm sorry I didn't say anything before.  I just wasn't ready.  James and mom don't know.  Nate and Elliott know.  I'll tell James and mom ok?  Just not...I don't know when just not now.  Please don't say anything."  He shook his head,
"Although you should have told us when we met Nick it's not mine or your mother's business I suppose, but James should know.  How could you not tell your fiancee?"  She sighed,
"He doesn't have any ri-"  Robert raised his hand,
"Of course he does and you know.  You need to be an adult and tell him.  Do you understand me?"  She held her head down,
"Yes sir."
"Now, you're going to tell him and it's going to be soon or I will."  She nodded again, "Yes sir."

She decided to spend the night with James and they were lying in bed when his voice filled the dark bedroom,
"What are you going to do about work and paying the bills?"  She sighed,
"I have a week of vacation and about a week of sick leave, so I get paid tomorrow and two weeks after that.  After that I don't know.  I go on adminstrative leave which is basically leave without pay."
"How are you going to pay your mortgage and your car note next month?  I can help."  She knew how she was going to pay, she would use the money Nick's lawyer sent every month.  That was more than enough to take care of her bills, he didn't know about any of that though,
"I'll handle it, don't worry about it."  This would be a good time to tell him she thought but she just couldn't.  Before she and her family parted at the hospital her dad pulled her aside and told her she should tell him as soon as possible.  She didn't tell him she would because she didn't want to lie to him again so she simply nodded her head.  She jumped a little as James pulled her into his arms,
"She's going to be ok."  The words only made Quinn cry, she hated the words and words like them. Like, it's going to be ok or you're going to be ok.  They were just hard to take.
"Yeah, that's why they say."
"And you don't believe that?"  She shook her head,
"I believe it, I know, I'm just tired."

She couldn't sleep and she looked over at James, deep in sleep, before walking to the living room and picking up her cell phone.  She headed to the balcony and sat down,
"Hello, is everything ok?"  She smiled instantly at the sound of his voice,
"Hi and everything is fine.  I was just calling.  Didn't get to talk to you much today."  They never really got pass hello, the only time she saw him was after she ran out of Mac's room after basically telling Nick that yes, he was a bad father.
"Yeah, how are you holding up?"  Don't cry she thought, don't cry.
"I'm ok.  So, how is Nick?"  She told him to basically leave and that was the last thing she wanted him to do.  It would break her heart if he left her.
"He's been quiet the whole time we've been here.  But he's been even moreso this evening.  I don't think he's said five words since he saw Mac tonight."  She closed her eyes,
"That was my fault I guess."
"What do you mean?"  She licked her lips,
"I wasn't all that nice to him when he visited Mac.  I should have given him a chance but I just went off on him."  He sighed,
"I thought it has something to do with Elliott.  After your brother walked off with you when you were crying he looked pissed and walked out then I overheard him talking on the phone."  She didn't know that Elliott had talked to Nick and wondered what he could have said.  Whatever it was she knew it wasn't nice, he hated Nick and that wasn't going to change.
"Oh, wow.  I can only imagine what he said to him.  He doesn't like Nick very much because of how he treats me."
"Well, I can't say I blame him.  If I wasn't around the kid so much I'd hate him too."  If he weren't around him?  She hated him and sometimes she thought she loved him,
"What has he done that makes you not hate him?" That was with a little morte edge than she planned,
"That's not fair Quinn.  He's a good guy, it's not the easiest situation to find yourself in."  She shook her head,
"It wasn't easy for me and still isn't."  The hell with giving Nick sympathy and she was mad at Larry for even suggesting it.  They said their goodbyes and she hung up as she walked back inside James' apartment.
